Hosea 11

The Lord's Love for Israel

11 ^(A)When Israel was a child, ^(B)I loved him,
    and out of Egypt I ^(C)called ^(D)my son.
²^(E)The more they were called,
    the more they went away;
^(F)they kept sacrificing to the Baals
    and burning offerings to idols.

³Yet it was ^(G)I who taught Ephraim to walk;
    I took them up by their arms,
    but they did not know that ^(H)I healed them.
⁴^(I)I led them with cords of kindness,^[a]
    with the bands of love,
and ^(J)I became to them as one who eases the yoke on their jaws,
    and ^(K)I bent down to them and fed them.

⁵^(L)They shall not^[b] return to the land of Egypt,
    but ^(M)Assyria shall be their king,
    ^(N)because ^(O)they have refused to return to me.
⁶^(P)The sword shall rage against their cities,
    consume the bars of their gates,
    and devour them ^(Q)because of their own counsels.
⁷My people are bent ^(R)on turning away from me,
    and though ^(S)they call out to the Most High,
    he shall not raise them up at all.

⁸How can I give you up, O Ephraim?
    How can I hand you over, O Israel?
^(T)How can I make you ^(U)like Admah?
    How can I treat you ^(V)like Zeboiim?
^(W)My heart recoils within me;
    my compassion grows warm and tender.
⁹I will not execute my burning anger;
    I will not again destroy Ephraim;
^(X)for I am God and not a man,
    ^(Y)the Holy One in your midst,
    and I will not come in wrath.^[c]

¹⁰^(Z)They shall go after the Lord;
    ^(AA)he will roar like a lion;
when he roars,
    his children shall come trembling ^(AB)from the west;
¹¹they shall come trembling like birds ^(AC)from Egypt,
    and ^(AD)like doves ^(AE)from the land of Assyria,
    and I will return them to their homes, declares the Lord.
¹²^[d] Ephraim ^(AF)has surrounded me with lies,
    and the house of Israel with deceit,
but Judah still walks with God
    and is faithful to the Holy One.

Blasphemy Against the Holy Spirit

²²^(A)Then a demon-oppressed man who was blind and mute was brought to him, and he healed him, so that the man spoke and saw. ²³^(B)And all the people were amazed, and said, ^(C)“Can this be the Son of David?” ²⁴But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, ^(D)“It is only by Beelzebul, the prince of demons, that this man casts out demons.” ²⁵^(E)Knowing their thoughts, ^(F)he said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and no city or house divided against itself will stand. ²⁶And if Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then will his kingdom stand? ²⁷And if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, ^(G)by whom do ^(H)your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges. ²⁸But if it is ^(I)by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, then ^(J)the kingdom of God has come upon you. ²⁹Or ^(K)how can someone enter a strong man's house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man? Then indeed ^(L)he may plunder his house. ³⁰^(M)Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters. ³¹^(N)Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven people, but ^(O)the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. ³²And whoever speaks a word ^(P)against the Son of Man ^(Q)will be forgiven, but ^(R)whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in ^(S)this age or in the age to come.

A Tree Is Known by Its Fruit

³³^(T)“Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad, ^(U)for the tree is known by its fruit. ³⁴^(V)You brood of vipers! How can you speak good, ^(W)when you are evil? ^(X)For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. ³⁵^(Y)The good person out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil. ³⁶I tell you, ^(Z)on the day of judgment ^(AA)people will give account for ^(AB)every careless word they speak, ³⁷for ^(AC)by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

The Sign of Jonah

³⁸Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered him, saying, “Teacher, ^(AD)we wish to see a sign from you.” ³⁹But he answered them, ^(AE)“An evil and ^(AF)adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. ⁴⁰For ^(AG)just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, ^(AH)so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. ⁴¹^(AI)The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and ^(AJ)condemn it, for ^(AK)they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, ^(AL)something greater than Jonah is here. ⁴²^(AM)The queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, ^(AN)something greater than Solomon is here.

Return of an Unclean Spirit

⁴³“When ^(AO)the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it passes through ^(AP)waterless places seeking rest, but finds none. ⁴⁴Then it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when it comes, it finds the house empty, swept, and put in order. ⁴⁵Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and dwell there, and ^(AQ)the last state of that person is worse than the first. So also will it be with this ^(AR)evil generation.”

Jesus' Mother and Brothers

⁴⁶While he was still speaking to the people, behold, ^(AS)his mother and his ^(AT)brothers^[a] stood outside, asking to speak to him.^[b] ⁴⁸But he replied to the man who told him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” ⁴⁹And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! ⁵⁰For ^(AU)whoever ^(AV)does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”

Hosea 12

English Standard Version

12 Ephraim feeds on the wind
    and pursues ^(A)the east wind all day long;
they multiply ^(B)falsehood and violence;
    ^(C)they make a covenant with Assyria,
    and ^(D)oil is carried to Egypt.

The Lord's Indictment of Israel and Judah

²^(E)The Lord has an indictment against Judah
    and will punish Jacob according to his ways;
    he will repay him according to his deeds.
³^(F)In the womb he took his brother by the heel,
    and in his manhood he strove with God.
⁴He strove with the angel and prevailed;
    he wept and sought his favor.
^(G)He met God^[a] at Bethel,
    and there God spoke with us—
⁵the Lord, the God of hosts,
    ^(H)the Lord is his memorial name:
⁶“So you, ^(I)by the help of your God, return,
    ^(J)hold fast to love and justice,
    and wait continually for your God.”

⁷A merchant, in whose hands are ^(K)false balances,
    he loves ^(L)to oppress.
⁸Ephraim has said, “Ah, but ^(M)I am rich;
    I have found wealth for myself;
in all my labors ^(N)they cannot find in me iniquity or sin.”
⁹^(O)I am the Lord your God
    from the land of Egypt;
I will again make you ^(P)dwell in tents,
    as in the days of the appointed feast.

¹⁰^(Q)I spoke to the prophets;
    it was I who multiplied ^(R)visions,
    and through the prophets gave parables.
¹¹^(S)If there is iniquity in Gilead,
    they shall surely come to nothing:
^(T)in Gilgal they sacrifice bulls;
    ^(U)their altars also are like stone heaps
    ^(V)on the furrows of the field.
¹²^(W)Jacob fled to the land of Aram;
    there Israel ^(X)served for a wife,
    and for a wife he guarded sheep.
¹³By ^(Y)a prophet ^(Z)the Lord brought Israel up from Egypt,
    and by a prophet he was guarded.
¹⁴^(AA)Ephraim has given bitter provocation;
    so his Lord ^(AB)will leave his bloodguilt on him
    ^(AC)and will repay him for his disgraceful deeds.

Thanksgiving

⁴I ^(G)give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that was given you in Christ Jesus, ⁵that in every way ^(H)you were enriched in him in all ^(I)speech and all knowledge— ⁶even as ^(J)the testimony about Christ was confirmed among you— ⁷so that you are not lacking in any gift, as you ^(K)wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ, ⁸^(L)who will sustain you to the end, ^(M)guiltless ^(N)in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. ⁹^(O)God is faithful, by whom you were called into the ^(P)fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Divisions in the Church

¹⁰I appeal to you, brothers,^[a] by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no ^(Q)divisions among you, but that you be united ^(R)in the same mind and the same judgment. ¹¹For it has been reported to me by Chloe's people that there is ^(S)quarreling among you, my brothers. ¹²What I mean is that ^(T)each one of you says, “I follow Paul,” or “I follow ^(U)Apollos,” or “I follow ^(V)Cephas,” or “I follow Christ.” ¹³^(W)Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you ^(X)baptized in the name of Paul? ¹⁴I thank God that I baptized none of you except ^(Y)Crispus and ^(Z)Gaius, ¹⁵so that no one may say that you were baptized in my name. ¹⁶(I did baptize also ^(AA)the household of Stephanas. Beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized anyone else.) ¹⁷For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and ^(AB)not with words of eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.

Christ the Wisdom and Power of God

¹⁸For the word of the cross is ^(AC)folly to ^(AD)those who are perishing, but to us ^(AE)who are being saved it is ^(AF)the power of God. ¹⁹For it is written,

^(AG)“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.”

²⁰^(AH)Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? ^(AI)Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? ²¹For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach^[b] to save those who believe. ²²For ^(AJ)Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, ²³but we preach Christ ^(AK)crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, ²⁴but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ ^(AL)the power of God and ^(AM)the wisdom of God. ²⁵For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.
